OnlyFans, a subscription-based social media platform known for adult content, says it will ban “sexually explicit” content.

The London-based company says the ban will come into effect on October 1.

Here’s a safe for work (SFW) explanation of what you need to know.

What is OnlyFans?

OnlyFans is a site where fans pay creators for their photos and videos.

Its creators cover a range of professions including photographers, cooks, personal trainers, fashion influencers and TV personalities.

But its most popular content by far is nudes and pornography.

OnlyFans users pay a monthly subscription fee between $5 and $50 to view a feed of images. They can also pay for exclusive content and give “tips” for custom pictures or videos.

Why is OnlyFans banning content?

In a statement, OnlyFans said the “sexually explicit” content ban was to comply with the requests of its banking partners and payment providers.

“In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines,” OnlyFans said.

It said it would allow creators to post content containing nudity if it was consistent with OnlyFans’ policies.

OnlyFans said it would be sharing more information in “coming days”.

The announcement follows Pornhub operator MindGeek revising its safety and security policies earlier this year.

Pornhub, one of the most visited websites on the internet, was under pressure from payment processors concerned by reports it was posting illegal content online, including child pornography and rape videos.

What has the reaction been?

Content creators are mostly angry at the proposed ban on OnlyFans, which is some peoples’ primary source of income.

In response to the announcement, creator Meredith Jacqueline tweeted: “Cooool so I’m f***ed?”.

Another creator, Kenneth Pabon, told The New York Times: “OnlyFans is how I pay my rent … I feed myself from this.”

OnlyFans’ decision has also raised questions as to how the platform will survive without porn.

The ban has been compared to blogging site Tumblr’s decision to ban sexually explicit content in 2018.

Tumblr, which was bought by Yahoo for $US1.1 billion ($1.6 billion) in 2013, sold for just $US3 million ($4.2 million) in 2019.

How many people use OnlyFans?

OnlyFans, which was founded in 2016, says it has 130 million users and 2 million creators.

The site has boomed in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic and been a way for people struggling financially to make money.

It is not available as an app via the Apple and Google stores, which ban pornography.

Last week, OnlyFans released a SFW app with no nudity called OFTV that features free videos of cooking, workouts and music.
