Prior to the release of Netflix’s live-action TV series, “The Witcher” was already a successful multimedia franchise. Though “The Witcher” was originally a series of books by Polish fantasy author Andrzej Sapkowski, his work was soon overshadowed stateside by the video game “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.” The third entry in developer CD Projekt Red’s series of “Witcher” games was not only a huge critical success (via Metacritic) upon its 2015 release, but it remained a long term financial success, earning more in 2017 than it had the year prior (via DualShockers). The game’s popularity would eventually spike once again upon a wave of revitalized interest upon the release of the TV show.
So, while Netflix’s “Witcher” adaptation is technically based on Sapkowski’s written work, the CD Projekt Red “Witcher” video games likewise form a significant pillar of the series and are thus an influence on the recent TV show as well. The Netflix series includes, for example, a bathtub scene, referencing an iconic moment from “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.”
Now, Netflix is working on expanding “The Witcher” beyond just its flagship TV series. This includes “The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf,” an animated film set in the “Witcher” universe. On August 9, Netflix released the first full-length trailer for “Nightmare of the Wolf,” giving fans a better idea of what to expect upon its August 23 release. It also, naturally, includes a bathtub scene.
