When Netflix’s “The Old Guard” debuted on the streaming service in July 2020, it was a breath of fresh air during a time when new cinematic releases were hard to come by. The film, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, follows a band of immortals led by Andromache, aka Andy (Charlize Theron), as they undertake dangerous missions to help people across the world. Viewers are introduced to the squad through the eyes of U.S. soldier Nile Freeman (Kiki Lane), who discovers that she’s also one of these immortals.
The secrecy surrounding the immortals’ existence is of the utmost importance, since nefarious corporate figures like Steve Merrick (Harry Melling) would endlessly experiment on them to see how their enhanced abilities could benefit the rest of the world. “The Old Guard” is based on the comics of the same name by writer Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, and it was relatively accurate to the original story — save for a few minor changes to fit the cast. It was an instant hit among audiences, so it’s not surprising that Netflix is keen to follow it up with a sequel. Charlize Theron confirmed in June 2021 that Netflix greenlit “The Old Guard 2” (via Variety).
