A two-year-old boy has died in the US after reportedly falling from his dad’s arms while the pair were on an escalator in a shopping centre.
Police were called to the Town Centre in Aurora, Colorado at about 4.30pm local time on Sunday following reports a child had fallen from the second floor of the shopping complex.
Police say the child fell out of his dad’s arms and over the railing of the escalator after reportedly lunging forward, causing his dad to lose his grip.
Witnesses described hearing a woman screaming before some saw the boy lying unconscious on the ground, according to FOX31.
“At first, everybody was crowded around him and I think someone was checking his vitals,” Cesar Solorzano said.
The boy was rushed to hospital with life threatening injuries before dying early on Monday morning.
“All incidents where a child of this age is seriously injured or killed are thoroughly investigated by our Crimes Against Children Unit,” Aurora Police Department Lieutenant Chris Amsler told the publication.
The investigation is still ongoing but police said, at this point, they believe the incident was accidental.
A spokesperson for the Washington Prime Group, which owns the Town Center at Aurora, said the company’s “thoughts and prayers were with the boy and his family”.
“We are working closely with the Aurora Fire and police departments as they investigate the accident,” the company said in a statement.
