Victoria has recorded 61 new locally acquired cases of Covid-19, with 13 of those unlinked to known clusters.
The concerning jump in infections comes after Premier Daniel Andrews on Friday warned of tougher restrictions to avoid plunging into a crisis similar to NSW.
Health authorities said 22 of the new infections reported on Saturday were in isolation for the duration of their infectious period and 48 are linked to known outbreaks.
Another 16 local cases were recorded on a rapid PCR testing platform and will be reported in Sunday’s numbers.
“It’s not just delicate, it’s not a tipping point, we are right on the edge of this getting away from us,” the Premier told reporters on Friday.
Mr Andrews is expected to face the media on Saturday morning with the possibility of the Melbourne lockdown being extended across the state.
